Disability Support with the SIL Company

Tailored disability support

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is purpose-built housing designed for NDIS participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. These homes provide a safe, accessible, and supportive living environment, allowing residents to receive the daily care they need while maintaining independence.

At The SIL Company, we partner with leading disability housing providers to help you find an SDA home that suits your needs. We then provide Supported Independent Living (SIL) services to ensure you receive the right level of disability support for day-to-day living.

What are the different SDA design categories?

SDA homes are purpose-built to support individuals with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. The NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) design categories ensure that homes are built to specific standards to meet different levels of accessibility and support.

Fully Accessible SDA

Designed for people with significant physical disabilities, Fully Accessible homes feature:

  • Step-free entryways and open-plan layouts for easy mobility.
  • Wide doorways and hallways to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids.
  • Height-adjustable benchtops, sinks, and appliances for greater independence.
  • Smart home technology to assist with lighting, doors, and temperature control.

Improved Liveability SDA

This category is for individuals with sensory, cognitive, or intellectual impairments, providing:

  • High-contrast features and tactile cues to assist with navigation.
  • Enhanced lighting and soundproofing for sensory-friendly living.
  • Assistive technology options for communication and environmental control.
  • Thoughtfully designed spaces that reduce overstimulation and confusion.

High Physical Support SDA

For people with very high support needs, these homes offer advanced accessibility, including:

  • Ceiling hoists and automated doors to reduce manual lifting.
  • Emergency power backup for life-supporting equipment.
  • Fully accessible bathrooms with hoist tracks and grab rails.
  • Smart technology to enable remote operation of doors, lights, and climate control.

Robust SDA

Designed for individuals with complex behavioural support needs, Robust homes feature:

  • Reinforced walls, doors, and impact-resistant materials for added safety.
  • Secure exits and quiet spaces to provide a calming environment.
  • Durable fixtures and fittings to withstand high-impact use.

How SDA & SIL work together

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Supported Independent Living (SIL) are two separate but complementary types of NDIS support that work together to provide a safe, accessible home and the daily assistance needed to live independently.

SDA refers to the physical home itself – purpose-built housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. These homes are designed to be fully accessible, safe, and tailored to an individual’s mobility, sensory, and functional requirements. However, SDA does not cover the support services needed within the home.

This is where SIL comes in. Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides the daily living support needed for residents in SDA homes. This includes personal care, household tasks, meal preparation, and help with medication or medical appointments. SIL is focused on building independence while ensuring individuals receive the level of care they require.

At The SIL Company, we work with trusted SDA housing providers to help you find a home that meets your needs. Once you’re settled, our experienced team provides SIL services tailored to your support requirements, ensuring you feel safe, comfortable, and empowered in your home.

Together, SDA and SIL create a holistic living solution, ensuring you not only have an accessible home but also the right supports to live your best life.
