How we’re making a difference for NDIS participants
The SIL Company was founded with a clear vision; we wanted to make sure that people living with disability and complex needs are able to live full and satisfying lives. For us, that means not only providing exceptional care, but also working with our clients, their guardians and their other supports to help them meet their goals.
In the years since The SIL Company started, the team has grown based on this foundation of quality care. Here’s an insight into how we’re making a difference for our clients, and how we make sure that we continue to deliver a high standard of care even as our team grows.
How The SIL Company helps find the right SIL accommodation for each NDIS participant
It’s important to us that we help our clients find a home, not just a house. That means it’s somewhere they feel safe, happy, and supported. But that doesn’t happen overnight.
We have a carefully curated process that we follow with everyone to make sure they’ll be a good fit for a home, and that it’s the right home for them.
First, we gather some standard information and organise an initial meeting so that a participant (as well as their guardian or support coordinator) gets a chance to meet us, and we get to know them better as well. Before we start asking for decisions to be made, we want to determine if we’ll be a good fit for each other.
With this information, The SIL Company team will meet and ensure that there aren’t any potential concerns for our existing clients and to discuss what the best options will be to meet the needs and goals of the participant.
Beyond ensuring the home meets the physical needs of a participant (such as if specialist disability accommodation is required), we also consider if there are personal needs. For example, if having neighbours too close by causes sensory overload, we will suggest a home that is more suitable for a participant’s wellbeing.
With our different options, we’ll meet with the participant for a larger discussion and check which options align with their wants, needs and goals.
Once we’ve found a home that is suitable, we’ll draw up a transition plan which usually starts with a meet and greet with other housemates (if there are any). We’ll organise for this to be over lunch or while doing an activity together so they can all start to know each other better.
If requested, we can also organise for an overnight stay for a night or two before transitioning fully to help with easing into their new home.
Throughout the transition plan, we have multiple check-ins and interactions to ensure that the journey into the new home is as smooth as possible.
Finding a suitable home is just one part of what The SIL Company do to help make a positive impact for our clients. We also ensure participants are matched with the right team of carers to meet their needs and ensure they’re happy.
Find the right care team at The SIL Company
Having the right care team can make a dramatic difference to a participant’s quality of life and independence.
From the very beginning, we’ve known that our staff need to have the same passion we do for making a positive difference for people living with disability or complex needs. That’s why, our recruitment is focused more on the care factor rather than what certificates someone has.
While being qualified is important, we work with our team to achieve the training and certifications they need once they’ve been hired. What we can’t do is make someone genuinely care. For most of our staff, they got into the care industry because they have a family member with a disability, or they’ve come from another company that didn’t provide the level of care that aligned with their personal values.
We also want to make sure that a care team is the right fit for our client. As part of our initial meetings, we’ll discuss what qualities in a care team will help to bring out the best in the participant. That way, we can try and match carers the participant would like to work with.
How The SIL Company are equipping our staff for success
As we’ve mentioned, a key requirement for all our staff – from team leaders to care workers – is that they genuinely care. With the right people in our team, we can focus on equipping them to continually provide a high standard of care.
This includes evaluating client needs and providing training so staff can tailor the care they provide to the needs of the participant. We also prioritise ongoing training and work with staff to achieve the qualifications they need to further their level of care.
We also value being transparent with our staff and our clients. This way, we avoid any surprises and there is time to plan and adjust to any changes that may happen.
With a positive culture of trust and training, our staff are confident and equipped to provide the high standard of care The SIL Company is known for.
